NEW WINSTON MUSEUM ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT
OWENS DANIELS’ “THE BIRTH OF THE COOL”
New Winston Museum is pleased to announce the June 3rd opening of “The Birth of the Cool,” a photography project by local artist, Owens Daniels. The exhibit will run from June 3-July 2, 2016. “The Birth of the Cool” is a traveling photography exhibition which commemorates the rich legacy of some of the most iconic jazz and blues artistic musicians in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Programming for the exhibit will include free Friday night musical performances from several artists featured in the exhibit. New Winston Museum is located at 713 S. Marshall Street, Winston-Salem. Additional parking is available in the Old Salem Visitors Center lot.
The free exhibit opening will be on June 3rd from 6-9pm at New Winston Museum and will feature performances by Hashim Saleh, Joe Robinson, Big Ron Hunter, Vanessa Ferguson, Sonya Bennett Brown, Tiara LaShay Arvinger, Nathan Ross Freeman, and Diana Tuffin. A raffle drawing will include promotional materials from the exhibit.Wine will be provided by Carolina’s Vineyards and Hops. After the opening, guests are welcome to visit Carolina Vineyards and Hops for an after party.
According to artist Owens Daniels, “This work seeks to visually encapsulate the contributions to the heritage and traditions of this great American classical art form and its roots in and through the embodiment of local musicians.”
About the artist: Owens Daniels began his photography career at the U.S. Army photographic school of Cartography, learning the basics of photography and photo printing. In addition to his formal training, Owens Daniels worked for over five years as a portrait photographer for Olan Mills and Lifetouch Portraits, photographing families, couples and individuals in various on-site studio. From these experiences, he extended his photographic career by learning the art of Street photography and storytelling. As a self-taught photojournalist, Owens Daniels landed two year position as a lead photographer for the Star of Zion newspaper, one of the oldest black owned and printed publications in America. As a world traveler, retired military veteran, graduate of Virginia State University and Central Texas College, this Richmond, VA native now deems himself “Hybrid North Carolinian” and enjoys calling Winston- Salem, NC home.
