“Senior Services is excited to partner again this year with Hospice of Davidson County and Novant Health to bring this opportunity to the community,” said Christie Smith Senior Center Manager. “All of the partnering agencies want to stress that completing your advance directives is not something that is relevant only to the aging population. A health crisis can occur at any age.
“Communicating your last wishes now may be a gift to your family when you are no longer able to speak for yourself,” she added.
Advance care planning is a decision-making process that enables individuals to have a clear voice in their future healthcare and make their medical treatment preferences known in the event they become seriously ill or injured.
Advance directives are legal documents that express wishes to family, friends and health care professionals.
Having advance directives in place, including documents such as a healthcare power of attorney and living will, can help prevent any confusion and doubts about medical treatment preferences. Advance directives only go into effect if an individual can no longer speak for themselves.
