Here is the winning Love Story, submitted by Darlene.

My name is Darlene Pruitt and I would like to share my love story with the Good Guys at WTOB.

My husband Jerry grew up on the west coast hangin’ ten as a cool surfer guy. I have been an east coast girl my whole life, hardly moving outside of my town lines. As fate would have it, my Jerry who was a golf caddy “just happen” to pick up the bag of our Wake Forest Alumni and pro golfer Lanny Wadkins In September,1975, and around the third year Jerry had been caddying for Lanny, a friend of a friend wanted to introduce us. The mutual friend told me, “ There’s a dude who will be in coming into town that I want you to meet. You’re going to fall in love with this guy.” That was a prophecy I will never forget.

Long story short, we had been looking for each other all of our young life and knew instantly upon meeting that it was our destiny to be together. What are the chances that this California super cool dude, passing through my little city of Winston Salem would be walking in to the pub to meet this bar tending girl and end up falling madly in love?

Jerry stayed in Winston Salem for the next couple of months and we were inseparable. December took him home to California to be with his family for Christmas but he found his way back to me when the tour came to Greensboro.

One crazy and beautiful night we found ourselves sitting in a parking lot in my 1969 VW Bug and he asked me to marry him. I looked at him and answered his question with one of my own, “Well, will you learn to dance?” And in that little car…bubbled up in our own little world… we said the biggest “YES” of our lives..

I quit my jobs, hopped in his custom Econoline Van and we traveled the country and beyond on tour and off. It was so much fun traveling around the country listening to the Eagles, Dylan,  Gordon Lightfoot, Paul McCartney and Wings, etc. We felt invincible, free, and deeply in love. The van was our home, fast food was our menu, and joy was our way of being. Life on the road was bliss.

One year after meeting,  we made our way to SC to be married. We picked Black Eyed Susan’s on the side of the road for a make shift bouquet. We met our officiant on the beach. He was wearing his blue polyester leisure suit and Jerry and I both rocked our bell bottoms, ivory peasant shirts, and of course, bare feet. We handed a stranger our film camera and we stood face to face, this man and me, and said “We do Forever.”

So simple and so sweet. And it still is 47 years later.

Our story is truly one of falling in love and becoming the very best of friends. It’s common knowledge that we are “attached at the hip”, and our hope is that we never have to spend one day without the other and that when we leave this world, we will go together.

We love to tell our story, but to live it has been a dream.
